StrongMan Loading is a competitive strongman event in which athletes pick up heavy implements — atlas stones, sandbags, kegs, or similar weighted objects — from the ground and load them onto a raised platform or truck bed. The movement taxes the entire posterior chain, demanding power and bracing strength from the back, hips, and thighs. It is an excellent training tool for building raw functional strength, explosive hip extension, and whole-body coordination under heavy load.
How to do the StrongMan Loading
- 1Stand directly behind the implement with your feet roughly hip-width apart, toes turned slightly out. Visualize your path to the platform before you begin.
- 2Hip-hinge and squat down to grip the implement, keeping your chest up and your back flat. Wrap your arms around or under the object as grip mechanics allow.
- 3Brace your core hard — take a deep breath into your belly, create intra-abdominal pressure, and lock your lats tight before breaking the implement off the ground.
- 4Drive through your legs to pull the implement clear of the ground, keeping it as close to your body as possible to reduce moment arm and protect your lower back.
- 5Transition the implement to a lap-load position by resting it on your thighs at mid-height, re-positioning your grip higher if needed and taking a brief additional breath.
- 6Explode through your hips, driving them forward and extending your whole body to elevate the implement to platform height. Use the momentum generated by your hips — not your lower back — to get the object moving upward.
- 7Guide the implement onto the platform with your hands and chest, pushing or tipping it over the edge until it is fully loaded and secure.
- 8Step back and stand tall before resetting for your next rep or rotating to the next implement.
Form tips
- Keep the implement in contact with your body throughout the lift — letting it drift away dramatically increases the load on your lower back and bleeds power from the movement.
- Use your hips as the engine: think of it as a violent hip thrust at the top rather than a back extension. The hips generate the force that carries the implement up to the platform.
- Wear a lifting belt for near-maximal or competition loads; the increased intra-abdominal pressure it supports can significantly reduce injury risk on maximal efforts.
- Chalk or tacky (strongman grip compound) on your hands and arms improves grip and control on round implements such as atlas stones, letting you focus on positioning rather than fighting the object.
- Practise the lap-load transition deliberately in training — it is where many reps slow down or break down. A clean lap position sets up a faster, safer lock-out at the top.
Common mistakes
- Rounding the lower back on the initial pull from the ground — this places dangerous shear force on the lumbar spine and is the most common cause of injury in loading events; maintain a neutral spine by keeping your chest up and bracing before you pull.
- Letting the implement drift away from the body during the ascent, which multiplies the effective load on the back and hips and saps the explosive energy needed to reach platform height.
- Skipping the lap-load position and trying to 'muscle' the implement straight up in one motion — bypassing this transition removes a critical opportunity to re-brace and re-grip, increasing the risk of losing control of a heavy object.
