It powerfully engages the traps, upper back, core, glutes, quadriceps, and hip extensors simultaneously, demanding full-body strength and stability under extreme load. It is one of the most effective exercises for building functional strength, work capacity, and a competition-ready posterior chain.

How to do the StrongMan Yoke Walk

  1. 1Set the yoke uprights so the crossbar sits at approximately upper-trap height — you should be able to walk under it with a slight bend, not duck fully under.
  2. 2Step under the yoke and centre the crossbar across your upper traps and rear deltoids, exactly as you would position a low-bar squat.
  3. 3Take a tight grip on the uprights to help lock the yoke against your back, then brace your core hard and take a big breath into your belly (Valsalva).

  • Taking strides that are too long: long steps create a pendulum effect that causes the yoke to swing side to side, draining energy and threatening a tip-over.
  • Losing core bracing mid-walk: allowing the lower back to cave or extend under load transfers shear force to the lumbar spine and sharply increases injury risk.
  • Setting the yoke too high: a bar sitting on the neck rather than the upper traps is painful, shifts the centre of gravity upward, and makes balance much harder.
  • Looking down at the ground: dropping the head causes the torso to round forward, raising the yoke's centre of mass and making it harder to control lateral wobble.
