That rotation is what puts it in the transverse plane, adding hip-rotation control and single-leg stability demands that a forward step-up does not. It requires no equipment beyond a sturdy step or box, making it practical for home or gym use.
How to do the Transverse Step Up
- 1Stand with a sturdy box or step at roughly a 45° diagonal to your front-right, feet hip-width apart.
- 2Shift your weight onto your left foot, then pivot on your right hip and place your right foot fully on the step, toes pointing along the diagonal.
- 3Let your torso and hips rotate to face the step as the foot lands, keeping your chest up and core braced.
- 4Drive through your right heel to press yourself up onto the step, straightening your right leg at the top.
- 5Bring your left foot up beside your right foot so you are standing tall on the step.
- 6Step your left foot back down to the floor with control, rotating back to your start position, then follow with your right foot.
- 7Complete all reps on one side, then set the step at a 45° diagonal to your front-left and repeat with the left leg leading.

- Push through the heel of the working foot rather than the toes to maximise thigh and glute engagement.
- Rotate from the hip, not the lower back — let the whole torso turn with the stepping leg so the spine stays neutral.
- Stand fully upright at the top of each rep so the working hip and knee finish the full range of motion.
- Control the descent — resist the urge to drop back down quickly, as the eccentric phase builds strength.
- Choose a step height that allows your working-side thigh to reach at least parallel to the floor.

- Pushing off the floor with the trailing foot to assist the ascent, which reduces the load on the working leg and defeats the unilateral purpose of the exercise.
